He tried to use his card at a casino to get a cash advance.

The casino swiped his card several times because they said it "wasn't going through" (and you'll find out why that is just deadly and what to do about a card that "doesn't go through") however, after the casino cashier swiped it for about the fifth time, she said: "Your card's been declined."

The guy didn't understand and didn't know what to do. He thought he had more than four thousand in credit left. But his card was dead. He called his credit card company and was told: "Sir, we show you got a cash advance for $4,000.00.

He said: "But they said it wasn't approved. And they didn't give me the money."

He thought he was out of luck until he talked to an insider.



So What Happened?

He found out he could get a conference call with the casino on one line and his credit card company on another and get them communicating together.

Lastly, as a U.S. citizen, I know that the long-term solution for credit card problems in the U.S. rests with the U.S. Congress. After years of seeing Congress cave in to credit card industry lobbyists, Senators Carl Levin, (D-Michigan) and Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) introduced a bill to Congress to increase the transparency of credit card company operations. The provisions of the bill were:

  • Prohibit adding "trailing interest" charges on any portion of card debt that was paid on time and in full.

  • Confine rate increases on fixed-rate accounts to expirations of introductory rates or to card holders who pay late or otherwise break a card agreement. Variable-rate accounts would face similar limits, though the rate could also go up if the prime rate or other benchmark rate goes up.

  • Require that new interest rates apply only to debt incurred after the rate changed.

  • Prohibit interest charges on late fees and over-the-limit fees.

  • Require an issuer to offer the option of operating under a fixed credit limit that can't be exceeded.

  • Prohibit a fee for paying a bill by mail, phone or electronic transfer.

  • Require payments to be applied first to the card balance with the highest interest rate.

  • Bar interest charges on any portion of credit card debt that has been paid on time during a grace period.

Unfortunately, this bill never got off the ground. There just never was enough support for it given all the lobbying by credit card companies.

However, a new bill is currently working its way through Congress. It's called The Credit Card Reform Act of 2008. While it's unclear whether this bill will become law or whether all of the above items will be included in the final legislation should it be passed, the U.S. House of Representatives did pass the bill in September of 2008. It is now up to the U.S. Senate to approve, modify, table or kill this bill.

Since the mega lenders are all major campaign contributors and have lobbyists working night and day to defeat the bill or water it down, your U.S. Senators need to hear from you NOW.
