. . . the definitive resource for people who want to take control of their credit cards.
There are seven criteria to use in measuring a credit card company :
- Communication Quality (verbal and written)
- Promotion Delivery (terms quoted are what you get)
- Payment Services (availability/convenience/cost of paying)
- Operation Quality (transactions/billings/mailings as expected)
- Customer Retention (service/effort to keep you as a customer)
- Security (includes agent procedures)
- Merchandising ("pitching" of products)
To have the very best credit card, all seven criteria must receive high marks. While we will be preparing an on-line workshop to cover this topic, below are 7 basic steps you
can follow, along with questions to ask before you open a new credit card account.

Compare Credit Cards - 7 Basic Steps To Follow
- Select a few plans that look like they will meet your basic needs in terms of:
- APR (annual percentage rate or the percent of interest charged in a year)
- time frames
- membership fee (assuming "none")
- "other features" offered by the lender
- Set up a chart to make it easy to record and compare the features offered. List the features down the left hand side and the "candidates" across the top.
- Select those features that you feel are priorities for your choice of credit card and place them on your chart.
- Choose the questions you will ask about the credit card plan you are considering. Below are important questions in regard to the first three criteria (communication, promotion delivery and payment services). Identify the questions that match the features you want.
- Phone each potential candidate. Have your questions and your chart ready and record the responses to your questions. For each feature that the lender offers, give it a check mark.
- Compare the sets of answers, total up the check marks and the features each plan has to offer.
- Decide overall which credit card plan is best for you.
